Afghanistan has become Viet Nam. Just as in Viet Nam our soldiers are unable to distinguish friend from foe. They are being attacked from within by their supposed comrades in arms. And they are frustrated and disoriented from a meaningless war. It is time to bring them home, but our politicians do nothing for fear of losing face. And the tightly controlled media refuses to say the obvious. And so we know how it will all end. Badly, very badly, and afterwards recriminations will fly back and forth for many years.
Those who refuse to study history are condemned to repeat the same sad lessons again and again. The only politician who saw the handwriting on the wall and saw it years ago, was Ron Paul. But the media successfully painted Ron Paul as someone on the fringe back in 2008 and again just last year. And so as the Presidential race winds down, and the foolish War in Afghanistan continues unnecessarily, neither of the two candidates is saying the obvious. It is time to get out.
Each man cowed and overshadowed by the military industrial complex is willing to simply follow their dictates until the American people finally rise up and say enough is enough. But since this is an all volunteer force and only one percent, yes one percent, of American families are involved in the conflict, that time may be quite a ways off. Meanwhile, the needless killings continue.
Recall that Viet Nam was not just about Viet Nam. We were also engaged in Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. Likewise today our forces are engaged not only in Afghanistan, but also Iran and Yemen and elsewhere and across much of the world Americans are vilified and attacked. Where is Ron Paul when we need him. Ignored and discarded. But we can hear the faint echo of the words running through his mind at this time, “I told you so. I told you so…”
